Cespitularia infirmata is a soft coral species within the family Clavulariidae, similar to Clavularia, and is found in the Indo-Pacific region. This coral is known for its attractive, branching structure and vibrant colors. It is commonly referred to as a type of "bushy" or "branching" coral due to the way its polyps extend from branching stalks, giving it a bushy appearance. Cespitularia species can be found on rocky substrates in shallow waters, typically in areas with moderate to strong water flow.
The polyps of Cespitularia infirmata are small, cylindrical, and often appear in clusters along the branching stems. They are typically brightly colored in shades of yellow, orange, or green, creating a striking display in reef tanks.
Like other soft corals, Cespitularia infirmata is a filter feeder, relying on plankton and small particles in the water column for nourishment. It can reproduce both sexually and asexually, with asexual reproduction occurring via fragmentation.
Cespitularia infirmata is popular among aquarium enthusiasts for its beautiful appearance and relatively straightforward care, though it does require some attention to water quality and lighting conditions to thrive in a reef tank.
Placement in the Tank
- Lighting: Cespitularia infirmata prefers moderate lighting. Intense lighting may cause stress, so aim for a lighting system that provides moderate intensity to mimic the natural reef environment.
- Water Flow: This coral thrives in moderate water flow. Too strong of a current can cause stress and may damage the polyps, while low water movement can hinder feeding. Gentle to moderate flow is ideal to maintain healthy growth and proper filtration.
- Space: Ensure the coral has enough space to grow and expand over time. Avoid placing it too close to other corals, as it can become aggressive towards neighbors. Cespitularia has a spreading growth pattern, so adequate room is essential for long-term success.
Water Parameters
Maintaining stable water conditions is key for the health of Cespitularia infirmata:
- Temperature: 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
- Salinity: 1.023–1.025 specific gravity.
- pH: Around 8.1 to 8.4.
- Alkalinity: 8-12 dKH.
- Calcium: 400-450 ppm.
Feeding
Cespitularia infirmata is a filter feeder, consuming plankton and particulate matter suspended in the water. In well-established tanks, it will be able to capture enough food from the water column. However, in tanks with fewer natural nutrients, supplementing with liquid coral food or plankton once or twice a week can promote healthy growth. Avoid overfeeding, as this could lead to excess nutrients in the water and cause unwanted algae growth.
Maintenance and Care
- Water Quality: Regular water changes (10-15% per week) are essential to keep water quality high and stable for this coral species. Ensure that filtration systems are functioning well to maintain proper water parameters.
- Pruning: As Cespitularia can grow relatively quickly, periodic pruning may be necessary to maintain its shape and prevent it from overtaking other corals in the tank. Use a coral-safe tool to gently trim overgrown sections.
- Watch for Pests: Pests like nudibranchs or small predatory snails may target Cespitularia corals. Regularly inspect the polyps for signs of damage or discoloration, which could indicate pest issues. If pests are detected, consider quarantining affected corals and manually removing the pests.
Compatibility
Cespitularia infirmata is generally peaceful but can become aggressive towards other corals if they are placed too close. It’s best to provide some space between this coral and other corals to avoid competition for resources. In a well-planned reef tank with proper spacing, Cespitularia will coexist peacefully with many other soft and stony corals.
By maintaining the right lighting, water flow, and water quality, Cespitularia infirmata can be a stunning addition to your reef tank. With moderate care, it will thrive and add a beautiful, bushy appearance to your coral collection!
