Cycloseris is a genus of solitary LPS (Large Polyp Stony) corals native to the Indo-Pacific region. These corals are known for their large, fleshy, and circular discs, often displaying vibrant colors such as green, red, purple, or yellow, sometimes with contrasting patterns. The Cycloseris species has a unique appearance, with its distinctive flat, circular shape that resembles a large plate. As a solitary coral, it grows as a single polyp, extending its tissue to capture food and light. Due to its relatively moderate care requirements, Cycloseris is suitable for intermediate hobbyists who are experienced in maintaining stable tank conditions.

Placement in the Tank

Cycloseris prefers moderate to low lighting conditions, making it best suited for the lower or middle sections of the reef tank. While it can tolerate lower light levels, too much intensity can stress the coral and potentially cause bleaching. A light intensity between 100-200 PAR is ideal.

When it comes to water flow, Cycloseris thrives in gentle to moderate currents. Too much water movement can irritate the coral and cause its tissue to retract, while stagnant water can reduce its ability to capture food. A light, undulating water flow is the most appropriate for this species.

Water Parameters

Maintaining optimal water conditions is crucial for the health of Cycloseris. The recommended water parameters are:

  • Temperature: 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F), with 26°C (79°F) being optimal.
  • Salinity: 1.023–1.025 specific gravity (SG), with 1.024 being optimal.
  • pH: 8.0 to 8.4, ideally 8.2.
  • Alkalinity (dKH): 8-12 dKH, with 9-10 dKH being ideal for growth.
  • Calcium: 400-450 ppm, essential for skeletal formation and coral health.
  • Magnesium: 1250-1350 ppm.
  • Nitrate: Less than 5 ppm, as elevated nitrate levels can harm the coral.
  • Phosphate: Below 0.03 ppm, to prevent algae growth that competes for nutrients.

Feeding

Cycloseris is a filter feeder and benefits from its symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae algae for photosynthesis. However, it also requires supplemental feeding in aquariums where plankton is limited. Offer finely chopped meaty foods like mysis shrimp or zooplankton, or liquid coral foods. Feeding once or twice a week is typically sufficient, but avoid overfeeding, as this can negatively impact water quality.

Maintenance and Care

Proper care and regular maintenance are key to ensuring Cycloseris thrives in the reef tank:

  • Water Changes: Perform regular water changes (10-15% weekly) to maintain water quality and remove toxins.
  • Water Parameter Monitoring: Regularly check parameters such as temperature, pH, calcium, and nitrate to ensure they remain within the optimal ranges.
  • Pruning: Cycloseris does not require regular pruning but should be provided with sufficient space to grow without overcrowding other corals.
  • Pest Control: Monitor for pests like Aiptasia, flatworms, or nudibranchs, which can damage the coral. Prompt action should be taken to remove pests.

Compatibility

Cycloseris is a peaceful coral that does well with other non-aggressive LPS species. However, it can be territorial, so it’s important to place it away from aggressive species like SPS corals or long-tentacled LPS that may sting it. It thrives in tanks with soft corals or other non-aggressive LPS species, provided there is enough space for it to expand.

Conclusion

Cycloseris is a unique and attractive coral with moderate care requirements, making it ideal for intermediate hobbyists. With its vibrant colors and solitary, disc-shaped appearance, it can serve as a beautiful centerpiece in a reef tank. By maintaining stable water conditions, providing the right lighting and water flow, and ensuring proper feeding, Cycloseris can thrive and add a distinct touch of beauty to your aquarium.
